Paul VI knocks off Sierra Canyon in much anticipated matchup. By: Tyler Harden

SPRINGFIELD— If Sierra Canyon vs. Paul VI was not the most hyped up matchup of the 2020 Spalding Hoophall Classic in Springfield, Massachusetts, then I’m not sure what was. Sierra Canyon is arguably the most famous high school basketball team this season. With players like Brandon Boston Jr., Ziaire Williams, Bronny James, who is the son of LeBron James, Zaire Wade, who is the son of Dwayne Wade, and more, this team has been in the national spotlight for quite some time.

However, Paul VI is no slouch. Jeremy Roach, who is committed to Duke, and Trevor Keels, who is the number 35 ranked recruited in the Class of 2021, were keys to the Panthers stealing the show, and that they did.

Before the game even started, the sold out crowd erupted, as LeBron James entered the building to watch his son, Bronny, play. James and the Lakers were set to take on the Boston Celtics that night, so it was the perfect opportunity for him to make the game.

The first half of the game was what everyone expected, back and forth. Sierra Canyon’s elite players were all contributing, but Paul VI was always right behind. That was until Trevor Keels sank a three to tie the game at 25, and shortly after Jeremy Roach gave the Panthers the lead with a contested layup at 29-27. In the final minute of the first half, Christian May hit a three for Paul VI to give them a 35-34 lead going into halftime.

With the first half complete, the packed Blake Arena at Springfield College knew the second half will be one to remember. Paul VI’s momentum continued, as the Panthers went on a 6-0 run in the first minute of the third quarter. Not only were Jeremy Roach and Trevor Keels playing to an elite level, but the Paul VI defense was keeping the elite Sierra Canyon offense under control.

However, the Trailblazers came back within 2 points of Paul VI with just under a minute in the game. But, Trevor Keels hit a huge three to add to his impressive performance. Shortly after, Jeremy Roach came away with a steal and a one hand slam to seal the win. Paul VI came away victorious 70-62 over Sierra Canyon.
