Second Half Comeback leads Valley View to a 35-28 win over Berwick by: Tyler Harden (Game date: 9/27/19)

PECKVILLE— Berwick and Valley View have been non-conference District 2 rivals for the past few years, and this game was a great reflection of the grit, toughness and determination that is within it.

The first quarter was a fast one, as both teams ran the ball frequently. Valley View was on the board first on their first drive as Quarterback, Janaasah Boone threw a 20 yard touchdown pass to wide open Cyler Rozina to make it 7-0 (Kovalchik PAT). Berwick also scored on their first drive with a Teagan Wilk 2 yard run (Hinkle PAT). Wilk is committed to play safety at East Carolina.

The second quarter was when Berwick’s defense was at their best, as they held Valley View to no rushing yards. With the Bulldog defense doing their job, the offense managed to give Berwick a 14-7 lead with a Ryan Laubach 8 yard touchdown pass to Blane Cleaver (Hinkle PAT).

Late in the second quarter, Janaasah Boone decided to show off his arm, as he was able to find Jordan Conserette for a 65 yard bomb to tie the game at 14 (Kovalchik PAT). Berwick came right back, as Laubach was able to find Aiden Mason for a 25 yard touchdown to give Berwick a 21-14 lead going into halftime (Hinkle PAT).

Berwick came out with the same momentum they had in the first half, as Ryan Laubach capped off a 65 yard drive with a 1 yard touchdown run (Hinkle PAT).

Berwick’s next drive started on their own 1 yard line, as Jordan Consarette downed the punt before it went into the end zone. Aiden Mason got Berwick in comfortable field position on a 29 yard run. But what happened next was the play that likely turned the game around. Berwick fumbled, and Valley View recovered.

Valley View had the break they needed, and they didn’t look back. Boone threw a 10 yard touchdown pass to Zach Manchak to make it a one score game by the end of the third quarter. Boone then started the 4th quarter with another 10 yard touchdown pass to Jon Clark, tying the game. “Inside during half, Coach was just telling us that we have to stay calm and cool.” Valley View Quarterback, Janaasah Boone said.

Later in the 4th quarter, Boone was able to find Jordan Consarette again for 38 yard touchdown to give the Cougars a 1 score lead. Berwick did make things interesting at the end, as Laubach found Teagan Wilk for a big 15 yard catch. But, it wasn’t enough as Alex Savkov was able to stop Ryan Laubach on a fourth down run.

“It was a great win, we beat Berwick three times in a row”, Boone said, “It feels great to beat any team three times in a row, but especially Berwick. They’ve always been a competition with us.”

Valley View remains undefeated at 6-0, and they get set to head on the road to take on Western Wayne, who is also undefeated. “Coach just tells us to take it one game at a time” Boone said, “as soon as we get back here on Sunday, we’ll get ready for Western Wayne.” That game will be on Friday, October 4th at 7 P.M. Berwick falls to 5-1, and they will face Hazleton Area at home next week on Friday, October 4th at 7 P.M.
