Southern Columbia travels to Wyoming Area and remains undefeated By: Tyler Harden

WEST PITTSTON- Southern Columbia and Wyoming Area recently agreed to make schedule changes to play each other for better competition. After the game was temporarily called off, a last effort put things back on track. Southern Columbia is arguably one of the best teams in Pennsylvania, and they have some of the biggest names in Pennsylvania High School Football. The Tigers had not lost a game since 2016, and currently hold the state record of 9 state championships. Wyoming Area also came into last night’s game undefeated, and the Warriors were looking to take down a giant. Both sides of the stadium were full, and there were people all around the field at the fence. It was the most anticipated game in Northeastern PA this season.

Wyoming Area made it interesting from the start, when Wyoming Area Quarterback, Dominic DeLuca, ran the kickoff return for 51 yards down to the Southern Columbia 39 yard line. The Warriors ended up punting. Southern Columbia Wide Receiver, Julian Fleming, had a great one handed, 44 yard catch on the Tigers’ first drive. Fleming is verbally committed to Ohio State. Southern Columbia got all the way to the Wyoming Area 2 yard line, but the Warrior defense came up big and stopped them on 4th and 2, resulting in a Southern Columbia turnover. The first quarter ended with both teams scoreless.

Southern Columbia stepped on the gas in the second quarter, as Sophomore Running Back, Gavin Garcia, ran for 28 yards to the Wyoming Area 4 yard line. His older brother, Gaige Garcia, capped off the drive with a 4 yard rushing touchdown. Gaige Garcia is verbally committed to play football and to wrestle at Michigan. “I’ve done wrestling and football my whole entire life and I was kind of deciding which one I would lead to.” Garcia said, “when I got offered for football, Coach Harbaugh was like ‘why don’t you try out wrestling’, and I jumped on the idea.”

Gavin Garcia also had a touchdown of his own on the next drive with a 23 yard run. Gaige Garcia then had a 49 yard touchdown run. “Our line starting blocking well, the first series we were a little shaky”, Garcia said, “then we started executing and big plays started opening.”

After halftime, the Tigers picked up right where they left off. Gavin Garcia scored a 17 yard rushing touchdown, and he also had a 2 yard rushing touchdown later in the third quarter. Preston Zachman intercepted a pass from Dominic DeLuca, and ran it back for a touchdown. Zachman is verbally committed to Wisconsin for linebacker.

Julian Fleming, the #3 overall player in the Class of 2020 (via 247sports) was held to 82 yards on 5 catches, but no touchdowns. However, he seemed satisfied in another big win. “We came out and executed, it was one of the first games a team really tested us, hats off to them and their coaches”, Fleming said, “We just came out and executed well.”

Southern Columbia improves to 8-0 and will be on the road next weekend, in what could be another test against undefeated Montoursville. “We’re going to go through our scouting report, we’re going to practice, take it day by day”, Fleming Said, “Hopefully we’ll come out, execute and get the dub.” That matchup will be on Friday, October 18th at 7 P.M. Wyoming Area falls to 7-1, and will be at home against Hanover Area on Friday, October 18th at 7 P.M.
