Cunningham, powerful Montverde Academy offense lead the way in win over IMG Academy By: Tyler Harden

SPRINGFIELD— Montverde Academy Eagles and IMG Academy Ascenders are two of the best high school basketball programs in the country, and when the two play each other, it’s always a classic. On Sunday night at the 2019 Spalding Hoophall Classic in Springfield, Massachusetts, it was the main event, and it did not disappoint. This was the second time the two schools would face each other this season after the First was for the City of Palms Tournament Championship in which Montverde won.

Montverde was explosive from the tip, as they went on a 13-0 lead before calling a timeout. The Eagles starting lineup consisted of five Division 1 prospects, four of which already have committed, and they all contributed right from the start. But IMG has their fair share of Division 1 talent, as the Ascenders came within two mid way through the second quarter at 22-20. However, Montverde found enough of a rhythm to regain momentum and go into halftime up 37-26.

Montverde carried that momentum into the second half as Moses Moody made an and one. Moody is committed to Arkansas for the class of 2020. From there, whatever breaks IMG got, including a three by Jaden Springer that left Cade Cunningham slipping, Montverde would answer. Jaden Springer is headed to Tennessee for the class of 2020. To end the third quarter, Matthew Murrell, who is headed to Ole Miss, hit a shot from three quarters of the court out. The play made the Sports Center Top 10 at number 5.

Cade Cunningham, who is the number 2 overall player in the Class of 2020 committed to Oklahoma State, was on full display tonight. He was the turning point on both offense and defense for Montverde when they needed one at multiple times. The combo guard really showed why he is the number 2 player in the Class. The final score was Montverde 76, IMG 64.

Cunningham was named the Player of the Game as he finished with 18 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals. With the win tonight, the Eagles move to 18-0 and remain the nation’s number 1 team.
