ISAIAH WONG aka WONG ZILLA!! MONSTER on the COURT by Big Star

ISAIAH WONG aka WONG ZILLA!!  MONSTER on the COURT

It’s ironic that one of the nicknames that hoop heads have given Isaiah Wong is WONG ZILLA, which is a play off of GODZILLA, the monster who originated from a Japanese film series in 1954.  Godzilla became a worldwide pop culture icon, and is often dubbed the “KING OF THE MONSTERS”.  In the movies Godzilla would lurk under the ocean quietly, but when awaken he would reek havoc on everything in his path, especially the opposition.  Since I first had the opportunity to film Isaiah Wong during the 2017-18 high school hoop season at Bonner-Prendergast HS (PA), I noticed that his ball game can kind of be described the same way that film buffs describe GODZILLA.  From my experience, Wong is normally quite and soft spoken, is normally chilling in the cut, but when it’s time to lace up and the opposing team is facing him on the court, he turns into a monster.  He literally destroys everything in his path.  When I first saw him play, his name had proceeded him, and I just heard people pointing and saying “there’s Isaiah, there’s Isaiah” (similar to the Japanese films when the characters would point and shout “Godzilla, Godzilla”).  I didn’t know what to expect until I witnessed him slashing through the lane untouched and finishing at the basket with ease.  He demonstrates a high level of fundamental skills, mixed with flash, speed, aggression, athleticism, and explosiveness.  I’ve witnessed WONG pick pockets on the court and finish with a 360 dunk, as well as take his defender off the dribble and end it with a textbook baseline jump shot.  He definitely has all the tools to be a great college player.  He had a highly successful junior season earning the honor of PHILADELPHIA CATHOLIC LEAGUE MVP, which is a league that is always loaded with D1 talent from top to bottom.  During the 2018 AAU season he played with WE R1 on the Under Armour circuit and had lots of success.  He recently announced his top 5 school that are interested in having him as part of their legacy, including UCONN, MIAMI, VILLANOVA, CLEMSON, and PITT.  It will be interesting to see where Isaiah chooses to spend his college career, and as long as he remains the hungry monster on the court, he is sure to have a long and successful career.  Stay tuned for the commitment, who will it be?
